  • Evade writing about particular patients or sharing videos without the consent of patients.
  • Follow the “dual-citizenship” methodology. Distinct your personal and professional online identities to “maintain professional boundaries”.
  • Opt for highest privacy settings and regularly check your privacy settings.
  • All content online may be found. Anything you write can be read/viewed by anyone, anywhere, at any time.
  • Keep professional limitations online: Evade spreading “friend requests” to patients or accepting friend requests from patients on your personal social networking pages.
  • Accurately state your credentials; be honest in all your interactions. Avoid any misleading claims.
  • Always be transparent whether you are posting your comments in a personal capacity or you are working in an organization. Disclose your conflicts of interests.
  • Protect patient information. Train all your staff on privacy issues. Doctors who own a practice can be sued for the social media activities of their employees, if they violate privacy laws.
  • Do not post a screenshot of the patient’s medical records on Facebook or any other social media. A patient’s ‘protected health information’, such as their name or photograph, linked to a review may end in a legal dispute.
